Cultivated forms bred for the house or conservatory are not 'alpines'. However, these were originally developed from wild mountain Chinese plants with white or pale pink flowers usually known as P. obconica v. werringtonensis which are hardy under cold glass to about -7C and make an attractive, often winter-flowering subject for the alpine house for milder districts. W Yunnan, W Sichuan and eastwards; SE Tibet. Shrubbery on limestone, up to 3200 m.
