According to the United Nations Development Program, being a “Sustainable City” means “investment in public transport, creating green public spaces, and urban planning and management..”
It is also known as “Urban Sustainability,” which can be defined as a city “organised without excessive reliance on the surrounding countryside and be able to power itself with renewable sources of energy. The aim of this is to create the smallest possible ecological footprint and to produce the lowest quantity of pollution possible, to efficiently use land, compost used materials, recycle it or convert waste-to-energy, and to make the city’s overall contribution to climate change minimal.”
Arcadis looked at three demands of “People, Planet, and Profit” to develop a ranking of 100 of the “world’s leading cities.” Here are the top 10 of 2016:
- Zurich
- Singapore
- Stockholm
- Vienna
- London
- Frankfurt
- Seoul
- Hamburg
- Prague
- Munich
