Who would not want to collaborate with such a well-known director (Martin Scorsese)? He is, after all, one of the most sought-after filmmakers, with works like The Irishman.

And Wahlberg seemed to be Scorsese’s match when it came to casting him in a 2006 crime thriller film. But the actor, who has repeatedly displayed his incredible acting skills, was utterly unprepared to work with the 80-year-old legendary filmmaker on this project.

When Mark Wahlberg Experienced Serious Issues On The Departed Set

Even though it worked out very well, Martin Scorsese, the film’s director, and actor Mark Wahlberg experienced some difficulties during production.

First off, the Ted star did not think the project was a good fit for him when it was first presented to him. At the time, the agent for Wahlberg assumed without question that the Uncharted actor would be open to working on Scorsese’s film.

This required Wahlberg to decline Scorsese directly. He informed GQ:

The Departed was interesting because I wasn’t committed to making the movie and my agent told Marty that I was. Marty called me up and he was so excited about making this movie together. I said, ‘I’m not doing the movie.’”

Scorsese was not quite on the same page with the 52-year-old actor regarding some requirements the latter had to fulfill in order to work on The Departed. Also, the Daddy’s Home actor was ordered to board a plane by his agent to meet with Scorsese in person to discuss the project.

Mark Wahlberg Was ‘Mad at Everybody’

The cast and crew (including Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jack Nicholson) of the project were extremely talented, and Mark Wahlberg found himself overwhelmed working with them. However, Wahlberg did not always enjoy the process of filming the movie.

The Me Time actor often found himself at odds with the movie’s director. He admitted to The Telegraph in a 2007 interview that he and Martin Scorsese had been engaged in a constant struggle.

“I had problems with Marty.”

One of the arguments was sparked by Scorsese’s annoyance with Wahlberg’s refusal to get his hair cut. The director was not the only target of the actor’s frustration. He also grew a little impatient with his coworkers, but mainly because of the impact of his role.

“The whole time I was in the character so I was mad at everybody. It was Leo, Matt, and Jack. F*** Jack, too.”

It is no secret that working on a movie set can be stressful, particularly when you are surrounded by actors who are equally talented as you are. However, there are times when stress can be good because it forces actors out of their comfort zones and helps them give strong performances.

Even though the tension between Wahlberg, Damon, and DiCaprio on the set of The Departed may have been heated, it seems that they managed to put it aside for the benefit of the movie. And it goes without saying that we are all appreciative of that.

Well, you can enjoy The Departed, which is available on HBO Max.
