I setup somewhat of a video wall for watching sports at home, with one large display and two smaller ones above it. I wanted a way to quickly switch the audio input to my home theater sound. I figure switching the HDMI would cause a delay as the system would have to initialize the input each time it was switched. This device ended up being perfect for my application, as the output is continuous as the switching happens. So the audio switches quickly with no delay.

This is the only SPDIF/TOSLINK switch I could find with the remote IR input. I thought initially that the credit card style remote was problematic until I realized that the remote puts itself to sleep after an idle period. First press wakes it up, then the second press works every time. So i just make it a habit to “double-click” for each change.

Finally, I was delighted to learn that J-Tech is practically in my backyard, with their HQ less than half a mile from my office. Great job, guys!

I was looking for a product that would allow me to connect 2-3 audio source devices to the single input to my Bose theater system. This product was very easy to set up and worked perfectly with no degradation of sound quality. The IR remote feature is excellent so that one does not have to fumble to find this connector to switch the channels after it’s been hidden behind everything. The remote sensor is small so you can hide it away with a small adhesive patch on the bottom to keep it in place. My Blu-ray player’s digital audio port is co-axial. My primary source is the cable box which is #1 and my Fire TV is #2. Don’t use #3 at this time, but would have connected my Blu-ray to #3 if it had an optical audio connection. Everything connects to my Bose 1-2-3 system. Thanks for a perfect solution to my problem. Without this I would have to manually switch the optical audio cable between my Fire TV and the cable box. I’m sure frequently connecting and disconnecting the optical audio cable would eventually cause it to break. I highly recommend this product. It doesn’t come with the optical audio cables. I bought mine (Bluerigger) from Amazon.

I’ve had this switch in place for a couple weeks now and It is the perfect solution to switch audio sources for my VIZIO S4251w-B4 5.1 Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and Satellite Speakers. I have the IR receiver mounted just underneath the soundbar which in turn is mounted several inches under the TV on a Bell’O PP59B TV Mount. I’m using 6 foot 9To5Cables Premium Toslink Optical Digital Audio Cables to make all the connections between my 50″ 3D Plasma TV, Smart 3D Blueray player, and my XBMC/Mac Mini based Media Center to the Soundbar/Surround system. The remote control is very simple to operate and doesn’t seem to confuse my wife. We are 8′ or closer when we use the remote and the IR receiver never fails to receive the signal and switch the audio source. The smart blue ray player is what we use most so it is #1, TV #2 and Mac Mini #3. All the cables and the switch is out of the way and since the stand and soudbar are all black you can’t even see where the IR receiver is mounted. The system is completely out of site and works perfect. The 9To5 cables compliment this J-Tech switch very well and are worth every penny. Excellent build quality and they fit very snug in the switch and devices. To connect to the Mac Mini I purchased an inexpensive Toslink-to-3.5mm Mini Optical Adapter on Amazon but wasn’t happy with that item because it would not stay connected to the 9To5 cable. I went to BestBuy/Magnolia and purchased an AudioQuest adapter, Model OPLNKMINIADAPT, for a few dollars more and it stays connected to the 9To5 cable. I’ll will update my review so people have a better idea about the longevity of the J-Tech product but I’m glad I read all the reviews and went with this setup.

  4. John Conley “Trinitydoc”

I was tired of having to repeatedly manually disconnect and then switch my optical cables from my computer and my Blu ray player to the optical input on my receiver depending which one I wanted to play back. This little device is so far working perfectly and it simply and inexpensively solves the problem. Although the instructions are pretty minimalist, the entire installation is so simple that I did not find the instructions necessary. Simply connect and plug in the power adapter, plug up to 3 optical cables form external devices to the 3 “IN” female plugs on the device, connect the “out” with an optical cable of your own (optical cables are not included) to your receiver, and that is it. When you wish to playback a device, the remote control readily switches to your desired device. It worked out of the box and installation took me less than 5 minutes. As far as sound, I have had no drops in output. I am not an audiophile so I have not made measurements, but to my ears the sound is indistinguishable to that I obtained when having a device connected directly to the receiver. The box seems somewhat lightweight and potentially fragile, but one is unlikely to be moving it about. The power and IR receiver cords are quite long permitting placement away from the receiver and in a location better suited to your needs. The only drawback is that you will need to make sure you have the necessary optical cords since the device does not supply them. As for the one star reviews, be cautious when reviewing them. The listing does not differentiate the J-Tech digital Premium Quality SPDIF TOSLINK Switch reviews from the reviews of other J tech products. It seems that the SPDIF TOSLINK switch itself is receiving generally excellent reviews, and that is consistent with my own results. I have no problem recommending this for anyone whose receiver or TV has only one optical audio input I am very happy with it but it is new and if issues arise, I will post a follow up.

  5. Mark

I really want to give it 5 stars but the remote does not really work very well. The splitter itself is GREAT! Small, compact, you can hide it well because of its size. When you hook it up to everything there is no optical audio signal loss at all.
