Guardians of the Galaxy star Michael Rooker will be putting his pedal to the metal in Universal's Fast and Furious 9.

According to Deadline, Rooker, who plays fan-favourite character Yondu Udonta in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has buckled up to join the unstoppable Fast and Furious franchise, taking on a last-minute role in the star-studded ensemble of the latest action sequel.

Rooker will reportedly play a character called "Buddy" in the next instalment of the car-centric series, though it is unclear how large his part in the film will be, as no further character details were disclosed in the casting announcement.

The actor, who is largely known for portraying charismatic villains, will be reunited with fellow MCU star Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, alongside franchise regulars Michelle Rodriquez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Nathalie Emmanuel and Jordana Brewster.

In addition, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren will be reprising their roles from The Fate of the Furious while John Cena will muscle in on the multi-billion-dollar film series to add a fresh face to the Fast family.

Justin Lin is on board to direct Fast and Furious 9 and 10, and the franchise will reportedly end following the tenth film.

Production on Fast and Furious 9 is currently underway, with the ninth instalment set to race into theatres on May 22, 2020.
