Bill Hader breaks down over his children in emotional interview

Bill Hader has had the biggest year of his career — but the worst year at home.

“I think I saw my kids a total of five days all summer,” the “Barry” star told Variety in an emotional new interview. “It was terrible. So I’m going, ‘Next summer I’m taking off. And I’m going to spend every day with them.’ It’s this weird thing where when you’re in this industry, you don’t have time to be with them, and it’s really, really difficult. I’m getting emotional right now talking about it.”

“Congrats, it’s the first interview I’ve ever cried in,” he later added, noting that he plans to spend the next summer at home writing a screenplay so “they can see me all day if they want. They can really get sick of me.”

Hader, 40, shares three daughters, Hannah, 9, Harper, 6, and Hayley, 4, with ex-wife Maggie Carey. He filed for divorce from the filmmaker in December 2017.

“I’m friends with my ex-wife,” he told Variety of the split.

This isn’t the first time the “Trainwreck” actor has struggled with a work-life balance.

“When I was on ‘SNL,’ I was a bit of a basket case,” he said. “It could not have been easy on my wife at the time. I was so consumed with work and anxiety … Once our second child was born, I had to leave ‘SNL.’ It was hard with one kid, let alone two. Because I was just never around.”
