The strong 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard crumpled down to the floor with an apparent Achilles injury and it seemed that his senior season might be threatened. Thankfully, it wasn’t as serious as originally thought but the Canby senior had to recover. Much of the off-season was lost but he’s 100 percent healthy now and ready to lead the team and earn some college opportunities.
As it turned out, there wasn’t a tear with his Achilles. But in order to heal, Evans was in a boot and getting around required putting his injured leg on a cart which precluded him from getting in any club basketball. “It was a long process this summer especially after the season losing a lot (not) playing AAU,” Evans said. “I did a bunch of physical therapy but I didn’t have to have surgery, so that was good. I played for a few weeks with The Pac but it was a slow start and I was out of shape for sure. But it was good to play.”
When he did play, Evans was able to show the qualities that make him unique as a basketball player. He’s blessed with good size and a strong frame, which allows him to finish around the hoop. But Evans is actually at heart a point guard with his ability to handle the ball and pass. Add in his smooth stroke from beyond the arc and you have a guy that certain projects to play in college.
Since he didn’t get a chance to play AAU, Evans remains under the radar. He’s hopeful a big senior season will lead to some opportunities. “I’m just trying to play at the next level, that’s for sure,” Evans said.
If his start is any indication, Evans will be in good shape. In Canby’s opener against Sandy, Evans knocked down a game-high 25 points while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Talk to him and he’s confident more is to come. “I think we’re going to be a lot better this year than we were last year,” Evans said. “I think our team chemistry might be at an all-time high as we all love each other and we’re all great friends off the court. It’s going to be fun.”
Evans currently ranks as the #32 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
