Giant Coconut Crab

If you thought those hermit crabs on the beach were creepy, wait till you get a look of the Giant Coconut Crab. It looks like something straight out of a Sci-Fi movie! As you verify by the picture, it is the largest land-dwelling crustacean in the world.

Now, before you start worrying about one of these things coming in and eating you in your sleep, FEAR NOT! They are called Coconut Crabs because their diet consists mainly of coconuts. They are also far too slow to be able to catch you anyway. Their large pincers are used for opening coconuts (not for eating small children).  To get to these coconuts, the crabs climb coconut trees as you can see from the picture to the right. Imagine seeing that climbing a tree in your yard! I can’t say I’ve ever really screamed like a girl, but I might if I saw this. Fortunately for us, they do not live in the United States; these crabs are found mostly in the Pacific Islands. If they lived in the United States, I’m pretty sure you would be aware of it (they aren’t hard to spot). My intention of this post was not to give you nightmares, but to show you an extraordinary creature that you may not know about. Although it may seem so at first glance, the Giant Coconut Crab is neither a Sci-Fi monster nor an alien; it is simply a coconut-loving crustacean that is misunderstood.
