Cameron Diaz Says We Need to “Normalize Separate Bedrooms” in a Marriage

Cameron Diaz has been happily married to Good Charlotte band member Benji Madden since 2015, but before she tied the knot, The Holiday star had a different idea of what the perfect marriage would entail: two separate bedrooms. On December 19, 2023, Diaz made an appearance on the podcast Lipstick on the Rim—hosted by Molly Sims and Emese Gormley—and unpacked why she once considered this arrangement to be the ideal living situation. 

The conversation started when someone on the episode admitted that her husband snores, which prompted Diaz to say, “We should normalize separate bedrooms.” From there, she explained what the setup would look like: “To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours,” she said. “We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine. And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations.”

Following her remark, one of the hosts commented that having two bedrooms might be a controversial stance, and the rest of the group joked that Diaz should have kept her thoughts to herself. “I’ve already said it,” The Other Woman star responded. However, she proceeded to clarify that her marriage with Madden would be an exception. “By the way, I don’t feel that way now because my husband is so wonderful,” she pointed out. “I said that before I got married.”

Diaz tied the knot with Madden in her Beverly Hills home in 2015. In honor of their eight-year wedding anniversary this year, the guitarist shared a tribute to his wife on Instagram. “In Love, Inspired, Happy and Grateful,” he wrote alongside an illustration of flowers. “8 years married, side by side, and now a little one for us to guide🐣let’s do 80 more and then forever ❤️❤️❤️ happy anniversary 1•5•✨@camerondiaz my ❤️❤️‍🔥🌹🌎.”

Diaz and Madden have also gone on to raise one child together, a daughter named Raddix who was born in 2020. Although the couple doesn’t usually talk about their little girl in the media, Diaz did give fans a glimpse into their home life while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. When host Jimmy Fallon asked if Madden sings for his daughter, Diaz replied, “Yeah, he makes [them] up. I’m like…’You need to do a kids’ album’ because he has the best songs. They play in my head all the time because he sings them to her, and she knows the words. It’s the sweetest thing ever. It really is. It’s so…it kills me.”
