“I did find it really hard at first. You know, there’s no book on this; nobody tells us what to do. And in fact, all of the existing media around what a stepmother is casts us in this evil, villainous light,” she begins before adding, “So, it’s kind of like trying to avoid land mines.”
“But for myself, the minute I decided, and fully embodied the idea that my stepkids were my kids and I love them just as much and I gave them the same rules and boundaries, and just kind of wholeheartedly went for it, then the easier the whole thing got. “I feel I’m in an adult relationship that is sometimes uncomfortable, because he sort of demands a certain level of intimacy and communication that I haven’t been held to before,” she explains. “What came up in the first couple of years of our relationship was how incapable I was in this realm, how I feared intimacy and communication.”
Oh, and she also says that in a lot of her previous relationships she “wasn’t particularly in love with the person.”
