Single comedienne Janeane Garofalo was married for 20 years to her Nineties boyfriend... and she had no idea

Comedienne Janeane Garofalo says she had no idea she has been married for two decades, until her unassuming husband wanted to walk down the aisle himself.

The 48-year-old stand-up comedienne, actress, liberal political activist and writer said she married her then boyfriend of one year, Rob Cohen, 'as a joke' in 1991- but didn't think the nuptials had actually stuck.

She told the New York Post: 'We got married drunk in Vegas... We dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought] you have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew?'

She added, at this weekend's reunion of The Ben Stiller Show, that the pair, 'got married, for real, which we had to have a notary dissolve not 30 minutes before we got here tonight. We were married for 20 years until this evening.

'We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something.”

Mr Cohen, who produced The Big Bang Theory, and was a writer for The Ben Stiller Show at the time, is now engaged to Jill Leiderman, a producer on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Despite Wikipedia describing the duo as married, both Ms Garofalo and Mr Cpohen thought it was simply a 20-year-long joke.

Now that they are offically divoced, Mr Cohen joked: 'I’m gonna get all of that "Reality Bites" money!' referring to Ms Garofalo’s role in the 1994 Ethan Hawke-Winona Ryder film, which grossed $21million.

After her role in Reality Bites, she was given a leading role alongside Uma Thurman in The Truth About Cats & Dogs.

Ms Garofalo's other supporting roles include Bye Bye Love, Now and Then, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, Dogma, and The Cable Guy.
