His heroin addict character ended up in several unappealing situations during the original film.

In one scene, Spud ended up waking up in his girlfriend's bed only to find he had soiled himself in his sleep.

His failed attempt to take the sheets home end up with him accidentally covering his girlfriend and her parents in his runny excrement.

It's yet to be known if there might be a repeat of such scenes in the new film, but the actor's gurning facial expression seem to hint that his drug-taking ways may have remained.

The new film, based on Trainspotting follow-up Porno, is being adapted by screenwriter John Hodge for the big screen and will also be shot on location in both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The sequel is set ten years after Trainspotting and sees the characters cross paths again, but in the pornography business rather than heroin use as the gritty backdrop.

In Porno, Renton owns a nightclub in Amsterdam, Begbie is being released from prison, and Spud is actually trying to kick his drug habit.

Kevin McKidd won't be back as Thomas 'Tommy' MacKenzie since his character died from HIV-related toxoplasmosis.

However, there is still hope for the return of Kelly MacDonald, who was 19 when she was picked from obscurity to play 15-year-old Diane Coulston in the 1996 cult classic, and original director Danny Boyle is also confirmed to be taking the helm once again.

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Collider, Hollywood heavyweight Ewan said of the forthcoming film: 'We haven't started yet, we start shooting at the end of May. The script only arrived very recently, which was really, really, really good.

'I think, if that had not happened, none of us would be into it. I think we're all sort of somewhat protective of what Trainspotting means to people, and what it means to us.'

The 45-year-old actor also insisted he wouldn't have signed up for the sequel if it hadn't had an 'extraordinary script'.

Ewan added: 'None of us want to make a poor sequel to it. So had we not been presented with the most extraordinary script, which we were, I think we wouldn't be making the sequel. But because we were, we are.'
