The Batman spoilers follow.

The Batman star John Turturro has opened up about the movie's big twist on his character Carmine Falcone and Thomas Wayne.

The new DC movie, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, sees the titular superhero discover that his father enlisted aid from the Mafia – lead by Falcone – to intimidate a reporter out of running a story.

However, Falcone actually kills the journalist, and Alfred (Andy Serkis) hints that Falcone ended up having Bruce Wayne's parents killed when Thomas threatened to go to the police over the crime boss's actions.

Yet, Falcone suggests to Bruce that someone else is responsible.

Speaking on his character's claims, Turturro told The Hollywood Reporter: "I think there are people who tell you 'I didn't do something' even if they did do it. And then after time, they believe the alternative version that they created."

Noting the importance of viewer interpretation, he added: "I thought he is a dangerous guy, and I think not seeing [the Waynes' murder] was kind of great."

Following the release of The Batman, director Matt Reeves has given an update on the planned HBO Max prequel series focused on the Gotham City Police Department, revealing that it's been put on hold.

"That one actually is put on hold. We're not really doing that," he told the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast.

"The series was going to be kind of like 'Prince of the City,' where it was going to be Year One because the movie is Year Two, and I wanted it to be the first appearance. But it wasn't going to be a Batman story.

"It was going to be about this corrupt cop, and it was going to be about how the worst gang in Gotham were the GCPD. And [Bruce Wayne] would have touched paths with [Commissioner] Gordon. It would have been someone to measure him against, but it would be a battle for his soul."

As for what is in store for the wider DC Universe following The Batman's success, Warner Bros boss Toby Emmerich has spoken on the matter.

The Batman has a release date of March 4, 2022.
