The Bay's Morven Christie and The Rings of Power star Peter Mullan are set to headline a six-part ITV thriller titled Payback.

From Line of Duty studio HTM Television, this one was written by Debbie O'Malley (Harlots) and takes us into the world of Edinburgh's Lexie Noble (Christie) as she gets tangled up in a sting operation to topple Mullan's crime kingpin, Cal Morris.

Living an idyllic family lifestyle, unbeknownst to Lexie, her husband Jared has been laundering Cal's dodgy cash on a vast scale – his every move is monitored by DC Jibran Khan (Patrick Melrose's Prasanna Puwanarajah) and DCI Adam Guthrie (Happy Valley's Derek Riddell) who are determined to wield the Noble family in search of justice.

"I fell in love with Lexie from the first page, and I'm absolutely delighted to be working with Peter and this wonderful team in my hometown," commented Christie, while the broadcaster's head of drama Polly Hill added: "Payback is a brilliant thriller which questions how well you know your partner and as the secrets come out, asks who you can trust.

"Debbie has written compelling scripts that will keep the audience hooked and surprised. I'm delighted to be working with Morven Christie again, and of course Jed Mercurio and Madonna Baptiste at HTM Television."

O'Malley herself went on to say in a statement: "I'm delighted to be working with such a high-calibre team at HTM Television and a truly superb cast to bring Lexie Noble's story to life.

"Following our ordinary wife and mother through the loopholes and increasingly grey areas of fiscal malpractice, into the murky world of organised crime, Payback poses the disconcerting question: just how far might any of us go, if we thought we could get away with it?"

Prior to Payback, Christie fans can catch the Scottish actress in Netflix's Lockwood and Co, while Mullan just debuted as King Durin III in Prime Video's Lord of the Rings prequel series.

Payback will air on ITV next year.
