Ewen Bremner has joined the cast of Showtime pilot The Vatican.
The Scottish actor, best known for playing Daniel 'Spud' Murphy in Trainspotting, will star alongside fellow Brit Anna Friel and Friday Night Lights actor Kyle Chandler.
The contemporary thriller, directed by Ridley Scott and written by House executive producer Paul Attanasio, centres around spirituality, power and politics in the modern-day Catholic Church.
Bremner will play Monsignor Alberico Iemma, who has the complex job of investigating and pronouncing miracles for the Church, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Chandler stars as Cardinal Thomas Duffy, a charismatic archbishop of New York, with Friel playing his sister Kayla.
Production on the show, which also stars Sebastian Koch and Matthew Goode, is expected to begin soon.
