Rhona Mitra is joining the cast of The CW's Supergirl for season 4.

According to Deadline, the actress will have a season-long role as villainess Mercy Graves – a character known from the comic books as Lex Luthor's long-serving bodyguard.

However, the DC series will see her stepping out from the shadow of her boss and becoming a central player in National City's ever-expanding 'human-first' movement.

Mitra is known for her roles in The Last Ship, The Strain, Strike Back and Nip/Tuck.

Grey's Anatomy actor Robert Baker will also be joining the cast as Mercy's brother Otis, described as someone with "savant-like abilities to assassinate aliens".

Supergirl has also recently confirmed who will be playing the show's first transgender superhero Dreamer.

Nicole Maines joins the show as Nia Nal/Dreamer for season four as one of three new cast members for the 2018-19 run.

Nia is described by The CW as "a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others", whose journey to become Dreamer will mirror how Kara became Supergirl.

Supergirl returns on October 14 on The CW in the US, while Sky One airs the show in the UK.
