This photo shows Irena Sendler in her later years. She's holding a poster with her portrait on it. The photo was taken after she was awarded the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest honor.

Sendler is best known for her work rescuing Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. She smuggled them out in suitcases, sacks, and even coffins. Over 2,500 children were saved thanks to her efforts.
