A colour riot in the fall, with leaves in green and yellow, and berries ripening from green through red to black. The Latin name for alder buckthorn is (Rhamnus frangula) (or (Frangula alnus)). It is mainly European. The fine charcoal of alder buckthorn was widely used from the Middle Ages through the Second World War for slow-burning fuses. Other uses - for artists' charcoal and, medicinally, to absorb poisons in the body. This buckthorn has no thorns.

Medicinal and useful plants: 1) Alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula, or Frangula alnus); 2) Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), a-flowering stalk, b-fruit; 3) Walnut (Juglans regia), a-stamen catkin, b-female blossom; 4) Lime (Tilia); 5) Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla); 6) Yarrow (Achillea millefolium); 7) Virginian tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum); 8) European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), a-blossom, b-fruit; 9) Great yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea). Chromolithograph, published in 1900.

The Purple Hairstreak is a fairly scarce resident. The species was more or less stable in the 20th century. However in the last decade there is a moderate decline and is expending northwards (even on some Frisian Islands. The species is mostly found on sandy soils, usually in the canopy of large oak trees, mainly Quercus robur. Here, the butterflies feed on honeydew and the males and females meet. It flies in one generation from early July until mid-August and hibernates as an egg. I photographed the species in a Sand Dune area in the Province of Utrecht in begin July of 2018. It feeds on honeydew of Frangula alnus.
