A Naples man who shot himself during a road rage incident last year will be back in court in April after attorneys said they were hoping to interview one more person in the case, during a Wednesday court hearing.

Alexander Evans, 25, was arrested in November for the Sept. 17 incident. Evans faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Melissa Drake, whose car Evans pointed a gun at while on U.S. 41, said she still needs to be deposed in the case. Drake, the driver, had three juvenile passengers in the car at the time of the incident.

The gun ended up going off in Evans' vehicle, injuring his leg instead. Evans' vehicle crashed into a guard rail near the intersection of Corkscrew Road and Sandy Lane in Estero. That's where deputies found him in the middle of the road suffering from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Evans wore a boot on his left leg during the hearing and used crutches to move around.

Geraldo Olivo, who is representing Evans, said he hopes his client is treated fairly.

Olivo wouldn't say what punishment Evans should receive because it's too early in the process.

"I think anytime you have a situation like this, I think if everybody involved looked themselves in the mirror, there are some things they’d probably do differently," Olivo said.

Drake, who was not present during the hearing, said she's pursuing charges against Evans because she doesn't want him to intimidate anyone else.

"It could have been a family with small children," she said."He needs some serious counseling. One of the reasons I'm pursuing this is I hope some good comes for him and he gets the help he needs."

Evans' next court appearance is scheduled for April 13.
