Were 'Phoenix Rising's' Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell Married?

Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell's relationship is a topic of interest in the second episode of the Westworld star's new documentary Phoenix Rising, which aired on HBO on March 16.

The former couple first met on the set of Green Day's music video for "Wake Me Up When September Ends" in 2005, and they dated shortly thereafter until Wood's relationship with Marilyn Manson from 2006 to 2010.

Wood has accused Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, of grooming her as a teen and claimed he "horrifically abused [her] for years." In the documentary she details these allegations further.

Manson has vehemently denied all allegations made against him and has launched a defamation lawsuit against Wood over the documentary.

Following the end of her relationship with Manson, Wood and Bell rekindled their romance and, in Phoenix Rising, Wood shared interesting insight into their relationship.

Were Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell Married?

In Phoenix Rising, Wood claimed she and Bell were never legally married despite it being reported they had wed in October 2012, two years after they had first got back together.

At the time, a representative for the couple told People: "The bride wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera. It was a small ceremony with close family and friends."

Reflecting on their relationship in the second episode of the documentary, Wood said: "We were together a couple of years and we decided to have a wedding ceremony, even though we were never legally married we felt our relationship deserved that moment.

"We had been through so much and we really fought hard to try and keep our relationship together. We were going to couples therapy, I was going to therapy, and I started to get better and I started to develop patterns.

"We had the most beautiful baby, but honestly I think at that point so much had happened that it was kind of too late, I think our trust just got so damaged.

"Every time I talked about the abuse I definitely felt that I was getting victim-blamed, I wish that he had all the information. It just wasn't safe to go there.

"Once I was separated I had some brief relationships that were healthy, but relationships are still hard, it's hard to feel safe and it's hard to be intimate."

The former couple share a son whose name they have chosen not to reveal publicly. He was born in July 2013.

At the time of their son's birth a representative for the couple told Us Weekly: "Evan Rachel Wood and her husband Jamie Bell are parents to a beautiful boy. Parents and baby are all doing well."

While attending the LACMA 2013 Art + Film Gala held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Wood and Bell wore wedding bands on their ring fingers.

Upon their split in 2014, a representative told Us Weekly: "Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell have decided to separate.

"They both love and respect one another and will of course remain committed to co-parenting their son. This is a mutual decision and the two remain close friends. They love each other so much but it just wasn't right."

Prior to her remarks on Phoenix Rising Wood referred to Bell as her ex-husband, even if they were not legally married as the Thirteen star has now said.

In 2017, Wood spoke about her and Bell's son in an interview with Elle Canada, in which she said: "Bless him. He's a gypsy by proxy because his parents are. He's only three now, but he's starting to understand. He hears one of my songs and he knows that that's me, and he has seen me on TV and he's starting to put the pieces together.

"My ex-husband's lovely and very British and straightedge. And then our son has got this glam-rock weirdo for a mom."

Meanwhile, Bell reflected on their co-parenting in an interview with ES Magazine in August 2017 in which he said: "As kids from divorced parents we understood very quickly the importance of maintaining a good relationship.

"I think that is also a generational thing: we learned from our elders that it's better if you have to share a space with someone to be able to look them in the eye. If you succeed, the kid succeeds."

Bell is now married to fellow actor Kate Mara and the couple share a daughter together. They announced her birth on social media in May 2019.

Newsweek has approached representatives for both Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell for further comment.

Phoenix Rising episode 2 airs on HBO on Wednesday, March 16 at 9 p.m. ET.
