Transgenic animals are those that have had foreign genes deliberately inserted into their genome. Ruppy was the first transgenic dog, created by inserting a fluorescent gene from sea anemones into dog cells and cloning them. The team implanted 344 cloned embryos into 20 dogs, resulting in 7 pregnancies and 5 healthy fluorescent puppies being born. While the efficiency was low at 1.7%, transgenic animals have applications like understanding hormone effects and producing vaccines through secretions. Transgenic fish can increase growth hormones, pigs can better utilize phosphorous, and mice can secrete malaria vaccines in their milk.
