One actress who happily does not feel the need to resort to cosmetic surgery is Kristin Scott Thomas. "I feel much more confident about my appearance now, even with lines on my face, than I did when I was 25," she says.

Still, the lovely actress admits that, at 50, she is marginally past her ideal age. "I think 45 is your peak. That's when you're going to be the best you will ever be."

Although her film Leaving is released next month, she says that she remains devoted to the stage. "I really love working in the theatre in London and can't wait to come back. I'm just waiting for the right play."

When the Four Weddings and a Funeral star appeared in The Seagull at the Royal Court in 2007, the man from The Sunday Telegraph said: "There is no better acting to be had in London."

Aaron Johnson's oh, oh no to 007

Aaron Johnson has just declared himself to be a member of the rather small club – he is a young actor who has no wish whatsoever to play James Bond.

"I wouldn't want to be Bond," says the 19-year-old actor, who won much praise for his portrayal of John Lennon in the film Nowhere Boy, which was directed by his fiancée, Sam Taylor-Wood, 43. Toby Stephens, among many other young actors, told me he would have had no problem at all from taking over as Daniel Craig, but he believed cinema-goers would, alas, have had a problem with a red-haired Bond.
