Grey Alder - Alnus incana

£11.95

Grey Alder - Alnus incana is a species of deciduous tree or shrub that belongs to the birch family. It is native to Scandinavia and central Europe, but has been planted in Britain and other parts of the world for over two centuries. It has dark-green leaves that are grey-white and hairy beneath, and produces yellow-brown male catkins in late winter or early spring, before the leaves. It also has ovoid fruits that are brown in summer.

Grey Alder is known for its ability to thrive in poor, wet conditions, as well as dry soils. It can also fix nitrogen from the air and release it into the ground, which improves the soil quality. It is often used as a pioneer plant in landfills, waste dumps and escarpments. It is also attractive to wildlife, such as birds, insects and mammals.

The current height of our Grey Alder is 20-40cm and can be planted year round.
