BIG BEN is the famous nickname given to the most prominent part of the Palace of Westminster, almost 100m tall and over 160 years old (build to impress!) CLOCK TOWER.

Only a few know its real name -The Elizabeth Tower.

This iconic structure unquestionably takes one of the top spots on the LONDON MUST SEE map. And without doubt, it is one of the most photographed buildings in the world!

Where The Name Big Ben Came From?

The popular BB nickname came not from a famous four-faced CLOCK but the hour BELL inside the tower.

Originally designed to be heard from 10km away (crazy when you think about it, it means that it was possible to hear at Stratham or Stratford!!!). The distance significantly shortened with time by constantly increasing modern London traffic.

The tower used to be open for tourists & Londoners willing to climb over 300 steps to see the famous clock and bell from a close distance.

Currently is shut and almost totally silenced for renovation works and the army of construction workers (no doubt working AROUND THE CLOCK !!!) is making sure that this truly remarkable world heritage landmark will keep London running on time for many more generations to come ( the clock had a reputation of being accurate within one second per day!).

For the last couple of years BIG BEN gives the sound only on Remembrance Day and New Year.
