Want to add edible butterfly decorations to the top of cakes, cupcakes, or cake pops? 3-dimensional chocolate or candy butterflies can create a beautiful, finished look and you can make them yourself without any special training or equipment. In this article, we'll explain the process from start to finish. If you're ready to get started, read on!
Ingredients
- Melting chocolates
- Chocolate chips or melting candy wafers
Steps
-
Make a butterfly wing template on a sheet of paper.
-
Cut a wax or parchment paper square for each butterfly.
-
Leave plenty of room to handle the paper after piping the butterfly on it.
-
Fold each square in half and trace the template on the back.
-
Use the fold as the body of the butterfly.
-
Cut an empty towel roll down one side.
-
Fold a piece of thin cardboard or card stock in half.
-
Place it inside the split towel roll.
-
Melt chocolate or melting candy wafers in a bowl.
-
Fill a piping bag with the chocolate or melted candy.
-
If you don't have a piping bag, cut a tiny hole in the corner of a plastic bag.
-
Pipe the melted chocolate or candy on the wax or parchment.
-
Use your template as a guide.
-
Pipe a thicker line of chocolate or candy down the inside fold.
-
This line connects the 2 wings and forms the body/antennae of the butterfly.
-
Wait a few minutes for the melted material to set up.
-
Don't let the melted material harden all the way.
-
Lay the butterfly on the cardboard or card stock.
-
Make sure the body of the butterfly follows the line of the fold.
-
Place everything in the fridge or freezer for an hour.
-
Remove the butterfly from the paper and put it on your cake.Advertisement

Tips
-
Generally the butterflies will need an extra dollop of icing to affix the butterfly to the cake securely. Thanks
-
Keep in mind that if your design is going to leave open space within the wings that the more often the chocolate or candy touches, the more stable your design will be when you are transferring it later. Thanks
