The power supply unit is central to the<br />

performance of any amplifier. A car’s power<br />

supply is normally in the 12 V ~ 14 V range.<br />

This restricts the maximum output power to a<br />

theoretical limit of about 50 W through a 4 ohm<br />

load. For more output power, it’s necessary to<br />

boost the car’s line voltage using a power supply<br />

unit. So most <strong>Pioneer</strong> amplifiers use a PWM<br />

Regulated MOSFET power supply. This means<br />

that the amplifier dynamically controls its own<br />

power supply and assures an extra current boost<br />

to the speakers to compensate for any drop in<br />

voltage caused by other electric loads in the car (e.g. switching on the<br />

defroster), which would result in power level fluctuations in non-regulated<br />

systems. The <strong>Pioneer</strong> regulated power supply provides maximum power to<br />

the speakers under real-life operating conditions.<br />

MOSFET’s create more power with less heat, so the resistance is lower. And<br />

with a higher thermal stability, performance is optimised at peak operating<br />

temperatures. With full MOSFET-driven power supplies, new <strong>Pioneer</strong><br />

amplifiers are better than ever at delivering power!<br />

<strong>Pioneer</strong> Intelligent Power System optimises performance from turn-on to<br />

turn-off. This exclusive circuit manages the performance of the amplifier at all<br />

times. From preventing turn-on or -off thump to adjusting the PWM power<br />

supply to provide the power for that extra-heavy bass note, it does<br />

everything to ensure you get peak power output without noise.<br />

Capacitors for the power supply work great to ensure enough power is<br />

available during peak usage, but without capacitance on the output stage<br />

many amplifiers will clip prematurely. <strong>Pioneer</strong> provide isolated banks for both<br />

that are optimised for each amplifier.<br />

<strong>Pioneer</strong> power amplifiers also use Parallel Coil<br />

Toroidal Transformers, which provide even higher<br />

voltage boost and lower magnetic flux leakage than<br />

normal toroidal transformers, further reducing noise<br />

in the audio system.<br />

Maximum performance of the new 2- or 4-channel<br />

amps is at 2 ohm (4 ohm mono) operation. This is<br />

perfect with a single 4 ohm subwoofer, or a pair of<br />

DVC subwoofers (wired in at 8 ohms each). If you<br />

The crossover network fulfills the vital function of providing only the<br />

correct frequency bands to each speaker, optimizing the performance<br />

of each component. <strong>Pioneer</strong>’s highly adaptable crossover network,<br />

available on the PRS-X340 AND GM-X944, offers a multitude of<br />

configuration possibilities. Rather than just offering high pass or low<br />

pass filtering, this network offers bandpass capability to effectively<br />

drive the midrange woofers. The high pass filters can also be set to<br />

high-mode (3-9 kHz), for driving the tweeters, while the low pass<br />

filters aren’t limited to the bass frequencies, they can also be set to<br />

high-mode, with a cut-off frequency of 3-9 kHz. In short, <strong>Pioneer</strong>’s<br />

crossover network gives you the flexibility to configure the system as<br />

you want it, not restricted by the limitations of the amplifier, or the<br />

need to add an external crossover unit<br />

Reversible Endcaps<br />

The chromed endcaps are reversible for more versatility in installation,<br />

and they hide the wiring for a clean installed look. It’s easy to reverse<br />

the <strong>Pioneer</strong> logo badge. First remove the endcap and flip over. Remove<br />

the retaining screw for the badge, then flip the badge around. Replace<br />

the retaining screw securely and reattach the endcap.<br />

range of free air, enclosure and Dual Voice Coil types. And there’s the Pump series. These amazingly compact subwoofers<br />

pump out extremely powerful bass. All subwoofers are loaded with <strong>Pioneer</strong> technology to ensure rigidity, low distortion and<br />

outstanding bass performance. Plus, all the new units are equipped with VCCS (Voice Coil Cooling System) which takes the<br />

heat off the subwoofer for extra pure sound! Ideal with a <strong>Pioneer</strong> amplifier, of course.<br />

VOICE COIL COOLING SYSTEM<br />

STRONG AND SOLID BASS<br />

A great discovery in sound from <strong>Pioneer</strong>, VCCS or the Voice Coil<br />

Cooling System brings high power to the <strong>Pioneer</strong> world of audio<br />

subwoofers. Strong solid bass requires electric juice to get it<br />

going. Since the situation can get pretty hot, the heat has to go<br />

somewhere. This is the job of <strong>Pioneer</strong>’s VCCS technology. As the<br />

voice coil temperature rises, so does the resistance. Unfortunately, increased resistance affects the<br />

damping factor and creates distortion. By taking the heat away from the new 4- or 2-layer voice<br />

coil using a heat resistant, highly conductive aluminium bobbin, the VCCS enables increased power<br />

and tonally accurate sound. Plus, extra slits in the bobbin reduce eddy currents while radiating the<br />

heat. This lowers the temperature of the voice coil. Problem solved, thanks to <strong>Pioneer</strong> technology.<br />

DUAL VOICE COIL SUBWOOFERS<br />

The flexible wiring configurations of the TS-W12<strong>01</strong>DVC<br />

and TS-W10<strong>01</strong>DVC, when used in combination with a<br />

low load impedance compatible amplifier, can give an<br />

even bigger and more powerful bass reproduction<br />

capability. DVC subwoofers have two voice coils, of 4<br />

ohm impedance each. These voice coils may be<br />

connected in parallel, to give a 2 ohm subwoofer, or in<br />

series to give an 8 ohm subwoofer. These in turn<br />

allow various installation configurations, enabling the<br />

creation of a truly superior system.<br />

Additionally, some new headunits can combine<br />

MOSFET 50Wx4 with the crossover network (Low Pass<br />

Filter) of the EEQ (Easy EQ) Plus system, enabling you<br />

to connect these subwoofers without amplifiers. (See<br />

Direct Sub Drive, page 14)<br />

These bandpass subwoofers pack a punch. Amazing what loud and kicking sounds can be achieved in such a compact size.<br />

The dual large ports and 20 cm woofer deliver fantastic bass. It’s easy to handle and highly efficient too. More sound<br />

variations can be achieved since it can be fitted into almost any location. The TS-WX205A has a large-sized aluminium<br />

heatsink so it stays cool, even if the boot is packed!<br />

The new TS-A Series 6" x 9" guarantee superior<br />

sound quality, corresponding to their attractive<br />

visual styling. They feature an IMPP Foam<br />

Composite cone, with an improved cone shape<br />

and surface finish. This new curved cone<br />

technique delivers balanced low-to-mid transition<br />

as well as smoother mid-range sounds. A Foamed<br />

PPC diaphragm for the TS-A6988 is lightweight yet<br />

rigid, increasing the sensitivity and delivering<br />

smoother, more open sound. Another new<br />

showstopper, the TS-A6958 Foamed IMPP tweeter<br />

diaphragm replaces the traditional paper cone.<br />

Not only does it look great, the sound is cleaner<br />

due to a wider frequency range and better<br />

response. High grade, heat resistant materials<br />

used in the high powered magnetic circuits and<br />

CCAW voice coil give the TS-A6988 and TS-A6968<br />

an even higher power handling capability, along<br />

value for money and absolutely no-fuss fitting. They slot invisibly into the speaker provisions in most modern cars,<br />

preserving the car’s original appearance, while delivering true <strong>Pioneer</strong> quality sound. And now a wide selection of regular<br />

grade custom-fit speakers are available.<br />

SEPARATE COMPONENT HIGH GRADE CUSTOM-FIT SPEAKERS<br />

Separate Component High Grade Custom-Fit speakers offer<br />

a selection of separate woofers and tweeters made from<br />

very high performance materials to give truly outstanding<br />

performance. Woofers use cone-integrated conical domes,<br />

butyl rubber edge construction, IMPP cones and ARM resin<br />

baskets, resulting in richer bass sounds, smooth mid to<br />

high frequencies and high power handling capability. To ensure equally<br />

superlative performance, tweeters have a neodymium magnet, a high quality<br />

diaphragm, magnetic fluid-filled voice coil and slant spacer for natural,<br />

smooth sound through the mid to high frequencies. While the woofers are<br />

designed to fit into your car’s existing speaker provision, the tweeters are<br />

small enough to be fixed in a wider range of<br />
